Lennon, who is a Catholic, decided to retire from international football in August 2002 upon receiving a sectarian death threat before a Northern Ireland match versus Cyprus. The threats were precipitated by his move to Celtic, a traditionally Catholic club. The threat was alleged to have come from the Loyalist Volunteer Force, although the organisation later disputed this. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/world_at_one/2210080.stm
