Neil Campbell

Neil A. Campbell (1946 – 2004) was an American scientist known best for his "Biology" textbook. First published in 1987, the text, which is co-authored by Jane B. Reece and is in its 7th edition, is now popular worldwide and is used in both high school courses and college classes. Each year, over 500,000 students use his biology textbooks.

Campbell earned his M.A. in zoology from UCLA and his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California, Riverside. He taught collegiate classes for over 30 years in Cornell University, Pomona College, University of California, Riverside, and San Bernardino Valley College.

Campbell has received multiple awards: the Distinguished Alumnus Award from UC Riverside in 2001 and the first ever Outstanding Professor Award from San Bernardino Valley College in 1986.

In addition, he was also a researcher who studied desert and coastal plants. He researched how certain plants would adjust in environments with different salinity, temperature, and pH. In addition, he conducted studies on the Mimosa plant and other legumes.

Among biology students, he is revered as God, especially by those competing in the USA Biology Olympiad.
