Neath has existed as a settlement since Roman times, when the fort of Nidum stood on the spot. Remains of the fort are also still standing, within a housing estate. The actual fort covered an area which now includes the playing fields of Dŵr-y-Felin Comprehensive School. Ruins of a small Norman castle can also be seen, close to the shopping centre. Other major attractions for visitors are Neath Abbey ruins and Gnoll Park.
