Native American name controversy
The Native American name controversy concerns disputed terms such as Native American and other language used to describe the indigenous peoples of the New World; it also concerns the debate vis-à-vis how best to collectively describe and refer to the various indigenous peoples of North America, in particular. Among the disputed terms are: Indians, First Americans, American Indians, First Nations, First Peoples, Indigenous Peoples of America, Aboriginal Peoples, Aboriginal Americans, Amerindians, Amerinds, Natives (as in Native Canadians, Native Mexicans, Native Guatemalans, etc.), et al.

In Central and South America terminology is much more likely to be dictated by the Spanish and Portuguese languages, and so these regions are not as widely exposed to this controversy. However, the term Native American may still be used when speaking or writing in English outside of North America.
