After the Chinese Civil War, Tsinghua University was divided into Tsinghua University in Beijing and National Tsing Hua Institute of Nuclear Technology recreated in 1955 in Hsinchu, Taiwan, which later became National Tsing Hua University. The newly established People's Republic of China removed all "National" appellations for all universities in mainland China to reflect the fact that all institutions under its jurisdiction would be public, while the university re-established in Taiwan kept its old name.
