National Liberation Front (Burundi)

The National Liberation Front (French: Front de Libération Nationale - FROLINA or FLN) is a ethnically Hutu rebel group that sometimes functions as a political party in Burundi. The FLN has been considered a minor group in the Burundian Civil War compared to the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy, but as of 2005 is the only active insurgent force in the country. In June 2004, the FLN claimed responsibility for the killing of 160 refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a camp near the border with the DRC. In May 2005, the group agreed to end hostilities but, following elections raising FDD head Pierre Nkurunziza to presidential office, the FLN declared in September 2005 that the new administration was illegitimate and they would not engage in negotiations with it.
