The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was established in the United States in 1984 as a private, non-profit organization, but seems more like a United States Department of Justice program, based on the US$30-million funding each year.

It acts as an information resource to help find children who have been reporting missing (either by child abduction or running away from home) and to help children who may be being abused or sexually abused.
