Nares Strait
Nares Strait (Danish: Nares Strædet) is a waterway, comprising the northern part of Baffin Bay, between Canada's Ellesmere Island and Greenland which connects Davis Strait to the Lincoln Sea in the Arctic Ocean. Nares Strait consists of, from south to north: Smith Sound, Kane Basin, Kennedy Channel, Hall Basin, and Robeson Channel.

In 1964, its name was agreed upon by the Danish (Stednavneudvalget, now Stednavnenævnet) and Canadian governments.

The strait and neighbouring waters are usually hazardous for navigation and shipping; however in August, it is generally navigable by icebreakers. Prior to 1948, only five vessels were recorded as having successfully navigated north of Kane Basin.

It is named after the British naval officer, George Strong Nares (1831-1915).

Hans Island, a tiny island claimed by both Canada and Denmark, is in Nares Strait.
