Narcotics Anonymous

:Narcotics Anonymous is not to be confused with Narconon, an unrelated organisation.

Spirituality

Another important fact is that Narcotics Anonymous is a spiritual program, not a religious program. Each member is entitled to freely choose a "Higher Power" of their own understanding. The only suggested guidelines are that this power be loving, caring, and greater than one's self. In NA, the Third Step uses the phrase "God as we understood Him." Although there is a gender implied, it is understood by members of NA that it is an individual choice to refer to their higher power in whatever way they choose. The word "God" isn't always used by members and some choose to use the phrase "higher power".

Some members choose to make their higher power Narcotics Anonymous, the group, or a spiritual principle rather than a divine being. Some members state that to them, the word "GOD" is an acronym for "Good Orderly Direction," in order to lessen any perceived religious connotations of the term. The bottom line is that NA members are encouraged to find a higher power that they can believe in and that works for their recovery.

The NA program, though the 12 steps, focuses on three indispensable spiritual principles: honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness.

NA is neither a sect nor a cult, and is absolutely not a religious program.
