Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a program of recovery for people with the disease of addiction aimed at helping addicts get clean, stay clean, and find a new way of life without the use of mind-altering or mood-altering substances. It uses a twelve-step program modeled on Alcoholics Anonymous. The 12 steps of NA reflect an all-inclusive program that does not cater to one specific drug. The first step involves admitting powerlessness over "our addiction," rather than powerlessness over drugs. "Clean time" in NA is defined as complete abstinence from all mood-altering drugs, including alcohol. NA members believe that the underlying disease of addiction is the problem -- and the problem doesn't disappear just because they stop using. Drug use is seen as one symptom of the disease of addiction. NA members believe that the fundamental elements of addiction are obsession, compulsion, and self-centeredness. Addiction is seen as a disease that affects every area of the addict's life: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. NA members believe the spiritual path laid out by the 12 steps provide recovery.
