On April 1, 2005 it was merged with Aomori, Aomori. The merger was very controversial. After the agreement was settled with Aomori city and the prefectural parliament had approved the change, strong objections were made by inhabitants of Namioka and the town chief was recalled. The new chief elected on February 2005 indicated his opposition to the merger, but the merger itself happened according the already settled agreement. It will be necessary for Namioka to separate from Aomori again now that both the municipal council of Aomori city and the prefectural legislature agree on its separation.
