Næstved

Næstved is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Storstrøm County on the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in the south of Denmark. The municipality includes the island of Gavnø. It covers an area of 200 km², and has a total population of 48,312 (2005). Its mayor is Henning Jensen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.

By January 1, 2007 Næstved municipality will, due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007), be merged with existing Fladså, Fuglebjerg, Holmegaard, and Suså municipalities to form the new Næstved municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 681 km² and a total population of 78,446 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Sjælland ("Zealand Region").
