The route leaves Sligo Town to the north, skirting the coastline before heading northeast to Bundoran. From here, the route passes through Ballyshannon, where the N3 road meets it, and on northwards to bypass Donegal Town, with the N56 branching off here. The road continues northeast through the mountains to reach Stranorlar. The N13 road leaves the N15 to head north to Letterkenny, while the N15 continues east to Lifford, where it meets the N14 road. The route continues across the border as the A5 road to Strabane and Derry.
