Post Ice Cube

In 1989, Ice Cube left N.W.A. because he believed his manager Jerry Heller was cheating him as well as his groupmates on their earnings. Ice Cube went to New York to recruit Public Enemy's production team, The Bomb Squad to produce his first album. The departure of their most important member drastically changed N.W.A.'s sound.

MC Ren and Eazy-E stepped up to the plate when Ice Cube left. On their remaining albums, Eazy-E became the more dominatant voice, as he wrote more lyrics than he did on the previous album, while MC Ren wrote harder-hitting rhymes to maintain the thrill of the album. Also, Dr. Dre took a more dominant role, as his production skills evolved to create denser, funkier sonic landscapes (which presaged his innovative G-funk sound). Also, he replace Ice Cube as the third MC of the group and rapped on more songs than he did previously. Their later albums marked a departure from the realism of Straight Outta Compton, being more refined from a production standpoint, but more exploitative.

N.W.A. released an EP first with their new line-up, 100 Miles and Runnin'. Included was the title track, which dealt with running away from the police, "Real Niggaz", a song which would be released on their next album, "Sa Prize (Part 2)", a sequel to "Fuck the Police", "Just Don't Bite It", a song about fellatio, and "Kamurshol", a preview for the next album.

Their second album, Efil4zaggin (Niggaz4life spelled backwards) was split into two suites. The first half was dedicated to gang antics, shoot-outs, and police evasion, while the second half was mercilously mysogynistic. Despite the change in sound, Efil4zaggin debuted at the top of the charts.
