Mystery


 
  • In modern colloquial English, a mystery is a subgenre of detective fiction (see mystery fiction).
  • Mystery! is a PBS program showing British detective fiction series.
  • Also in modern colloquial English, a mystery is something which is unknown.
  • Originally mystery was a religious term. Thus the Sacred Mysteries were rites into which only the initiated were admitted, lest they become the object of ridicule. See also Mystery religion.
  • Another sense of the word mystery is defined by the Catholic Encyclopedia as "a supernatural truth ... that of its very nature lies above the finite intelligence".
  • In medieval Britain, mystery meant a craft, trade or profession. Thus an apprentice to one of the guilds would be said to be learning the mysteries of that guild.
  • Both of the above meanings: supernatural truth or trade may be the origin of the name mystery play applied to a form of religious drama.
  • Mystery is the name of a chess engine. See Mystery (chess).
  • Mystery is also one of the four cats belonging to Emily Strange. (see Mystery Strange)
  • Mystery is a Canadian digital television channel devoted to mystery and suspense television shows. Owned and operated by CanWest Global.
