Musician
A musician is a person who plays or composes music. Musicians can be classified by their role in production, including instrument and genre:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
- A singer (also called a vocalist) uses his or her voice as an instrument (rarely considered a musician unless he/she composes music).
- An instrumentalist plays a musical instrument.
- Composers and songwriters make up music and write it down.
- A conductor coordinates a musical ensemble.
Musicians may also dance or produce choreography. The concept of the musician and the status of the musician in society is culture-specific. Think, for instance, about your own concepts relating to "the heavy metalist", "the folk musician", "the DJ", "the sarangi player", "the female drummer", and so on. See also: performer.

Songs may be produced by some animals, including birds. Although many would surely debate whether birds are musicians, their ability to produce variations on the characteristic song of their species is a subject deserving more research (though relating less to music and more to animal communication). The freestyle chatter of even common birds, although lacking the complexity of methods employed by human beings, must be regarded as having some relation to the origins of music. Human beings did not begin producing music by banging away on a keyboard, nor are they the only creatures which respond to (or produce) rhythm and melody.

Beautiful Flat in Temescal Area (oakland north / temescal) $650
I have a large bedroom that I am renting out for $650 (plus utilities) in a fabulous craftsman style house on the North Oakland Berkeley boarder (55th and Shattuck). This spacious old craftsman style 3bdr. flat has onsite laundry, wireless internet, two bus lines that run past it to BART (15 min to Downtown Oakland), close to freeway, quiet neighborhood, walking distance to the Temescal business district (think Bakesale BettyÂ’s), BBQ in the back yard with off street parking, a huge lemon tree and vegi garden out back as well, and one large very pink art deco bathroom. My ideal roommate would be someone who is clean, responsible, friendly, has no pets, doesn't do drugs or smokes cigarettes, has a job and pays their bills on time, has their own passions in life, doesn't have a lot of furniture, a light/social drinker and pot smoker, would be willing to watch TV in their own room, wouldnÂ’t mind a jazz ensemble or small band of chamber choral singing practice once or twice a week, wouldn't mind taking off their shoes at the front door in order to keep the beautiful hardwood floors clean, has a lot of common sense, doesn't have a lot of drama in their life, and has a general clue about being a respectful, kind, compassionate, and communicative housemate. About Me: I'm a 32 year old bisexual female professional musician and non-profit administrator. I enjoy reading, the outdoors, travel, running, yoga, swimming, knitting, good cooking, beautiful wine, great conversation, movies, and catching up with family and friends. I don't smoke cigarettes or watch TV. I don't have any pets (allergic), keep a fairly busy schedule, and don't have any kids, although my absolutely adorable nieces come by to visit every once in a while. Please email me back if you are interested. I have my mornings and evenings available to show the space. Would like to get someone in by October 1. Thanks. P.S. The green room is now a sunny yellow.
Japanese technopop music video of a French sixties tune
As a tribute to sixties pop star Claude François (he wrote the original tune for Sinatra's My Way and many other mega-hits in France), quirky Japanese musician Kenzo Saeki made this funky remix of Lundi au Soleil. It's actually part of a collaborative album dedicated to the French heartthrob?and commissioned by a French record label?called Clo Clo Made in Japan. You can see François' original version of Le Lundi au Soleil here. As far as I can tell, Saeki didn't change the words much, he just added some beats and made an awesome video to go with it. Musical & Artistic community house forming (berkeley)
Dear Friends and Friends-of-Friends and Craigs-Listers, Howdy! Daniel Tucker here; happy you’re reading this announcement. I’ve got an open invitation to the Berkeley world, and am very much looking forward to meeting whoever feels drawn to respond. I’m initiating the formation of a musical & artistic community home in Berkeley, and hopefully will soon have a few co-conspirators to share the work of investigating possible houses to rent, etc. Let me give a few details about myself, some visions about the home-to-be, and some thoughts on who I’d like to live with. It this resonates with you and you’d like to share in actively creating a community home then please get in touch. About me: - I’m 24 years old, and originally from Connecticut. I miss thunderstorms and sledding, and my hypo-allergenic dog Buddy. - I just got back from a Sunday hike in the Marin Headlands with four friends – spectacular views up to Point Reyes, and wild echo-ey acoustics in the old concrete WWII gun bunkers above Fort Cronkhite. - I am a musician and music teacher – I sing, play piano, guitar, harmonium, djembe, hang, flute and other instruments. I’m happiest playing the kitchen sink, or a bus seat. - My background is in jazz. The two groups I perform with now are a Beatles-inspired rock band and a kirtan band. - I’ve been teaching family music classes through Music Together, and right now am focusing on private teaching – giving lessons on piano, guitar and harmonium. - I just got a job accompanying modern dance classes at Cal on Wednesdays. It’ll involve improvising grooves on piano and drums to support the dancers, and I’m pretty psyched. - I moved to Berkeley over two years ago, after living in Nepal for a year studying Tibetan Buddhism and meditation. - I no longer identify with Buddhism or particular religious beliefs, but I do meditate daily and have a deep yearning to continue the unfolding and awakening of the meditative journey. I honor your beliefs, paradigms, practices, whatever they are. - I sing kirtan, an originally Indian form of musical prayer that is heart opening and devotional, and sometimes involves me singing my heart out loudly! - I love living in community, sharing meals, supporting each other, meeting housemates’ friends, laughing and being ridiculous. - More info about my musical projects & pics at www.danielctucker.com About the home-to-be: - It is a community based on friendship and similar vision; not a dorm or co-housing where people are living together out of convenience alone. - Music is a main activity. This doesn’t mean everybody has to be a musician – I’d love to live with creative individuals of any sort – but does mean that the house and community is being especially set up to encourage musicality and creativity/ to stimulate and support musical growth. - One living room will be set up as an acoustic music studio. It will house my grand piano (a Yamaha G3), African drums, and other housemates’ instruments, as well as seating and stereo etc. that make it a great music-making space. I’ll be teaching private lessons out of this space (5 to 15-ish hours a week), and would welcome a calendar system in which we can all reserve timeslots for gatherings, jam-sessions, teaching, or practicing we want to hold in the music room. Or somehow negotiate how we can each have access to the music room when we need it. - The house will be well kept, homey and inviting, and we’ll all divvy up the weekly chores. - Periodic house meetings – a time to check in about chores and finances, as well as other practical issues that arise in living together. - The house will be rented in Berkeley, and I imagine we’ll co-sign a 1-year lease. - $650 rent per bedroom per month would be great, but I’m prepared to spend up to $800/mo if that’s what it takes (let’s see what’s available, and what we can each do financially) - 4 or 5 bedrooms, kitchen, 2 or more bathrooms, nice big windows/ good light, in good condition, nice yard space, and ideally with two living room spaces – one for music room, other for plain old living room (or something else – dance space, sacred space, painting space). - Good neighborhood where we feel safe, and close enough to town. - Good landlord who takes care of the house and likes us, and charges fair rent - I’d love to buy food communally, and cook & eat together sometimes. - A beer or glass of wine is fine, but don’t take it to extremes. No smoking in the common areas. - For me, October 1st would be a great move-in date, or up to Nov. 1st if need be. About you: - You’re a positive, life-affirming and creative individual, male or female. - Ideally between 20 & 30 years old. - You work, or are a regular student – and are reliable/ dependable (esp. when it comes to rent and other house finances). - You are musical, or inspired to be part of a musical household. - You are emotionally stable, mature, and kind. - You like the idea of consciously/ intentionally creating a home community, and are willing to put in the time & effort to help make it real. - You’re a good communicator, and are willing to process with housemates when some issue comes up. - It’s not important that you have a spiritual practice, but it is important that you are accepting of housemates who do, and enjoy those activities happening in your home. Phew! This is what I’m bringing to the table, but the home will absolutely be a co-creation, and your vision and needs are just as important. Drop me an email - let me know a bit about yourself, and what your home vision looks like. Looking forward to hearing from you. Lotsa love, Daniel
Need crash space? Convenient location: Master BR w/ private full bath (san leandro) 1bd
We are offering sublet space in our 2BR, 2-bathroom apartment in San Leandro. You would get the master bedroom, with private full bathroom and large linen closet. Bedroom also has very large closet. Available partially or fully furnished. Fully stocked kitchen, though we are happy to make room for your stuff too. Living room is furnished, but you are welcome to use/share it. Shared back porch. There is parking on the premises, and plenty on the street. Very conveniently located: 1 mile to BART (with bus that goes directly there less than 5 minutes walk). Right off highway 580 (less than 5 minutes), not far from highway 880. Coin-op laundry in building, dishwasher, gas stove, no microwave (but we do have a convection/toaster oven). This is a particularly great opportunity for people just coming in to town, who need to scout out the area for longer-term housing. Whatever works for you: $600 for the month, $150 per week, or $30 per night. We are hoping to move out ourselves around October 1st, but are interested in sharing for a temporary sublet until then. We are 2 women (a couple) in our early to mid 30's. We are relatively quiet: one is a Celtic/folk musician and one watches tv, but we tend to keep volume levels lower than one would expect. We are a low drama couple, and are seeking low drama guests. We are happy to share information (and internet access) while you figure out the area, but are not available as full-time guides. One omnivore and one vegetarian (but the omnivore does all the cooking, and has grown to enjoy the challenge of making meals diverse households can enjoy). Guests might also need to know: we're Pagan, polyamorous, SciFi fans, gamer geeks; one Gaelic speaking, SCA lesbian harper/singer/songwriter, and one purple obsessed bisexual nightowl bookworm (named Cat). We also have 2 cats: a fluffy, grumpy, 15-year-old Calico, and a very pretty, friendly, gray seal-point short-hair. The apartment complex does not allow dogs, and we already have 2 cats. We may consider other small pets, but we'd have to think about it. We don't smoke, drink, or do any drugs (our substances of choice include music, chocolate, and Buffy videos), and we don't allow any smoking or any drugs in the apartment. I can tolerate someone having a drink once in a while, but I can also easily get very uncomfortable (and somewhat unpleasant) around drinking if it impairs your thinking or reactions at all, ever. We are looking for someone who would be respectful to us, low to no drama, who can communicate well and can handle stress in non-violent ways (including no verbal violence), who is responsible and pays their bills on time. If you are really a neat freak, you may find it difficult to stay here: we are not slobs and things are clean, but do get a bit cluttered sometimes, and right now we're in transition too so our stuff is still in boxes throughout the apartment. We are pretty hard to shock, and are welcoming of all kinds of lifestyles: queer, non-conventionally gendered, polyamorous, almost all religions (as long as you are respectful of us), alternative/holistic healing, alternative politics (we are pretty progressive for the east coast, haven't really figured out the bay area yet), artsy, intellectual, academic, athletic, goth, and many other forms of "weird". We can't allow any kink-play in the apartment, however. Also, no incense in the apartment, though sage and naturally scented candles are fine (we have chemical sensitivities, but can tolerate essential oils). We are hoping to move out around October 1st, but are interested in sharing for a temporary sublet until then. Whatever works for you: $600 for the month, $150 per week, or $30 per night. Feel free to forward this message to people who you think might be interested. You can call us at 510-363-8579 and ask for Caera (KEERa) or Christina, or reply to the email above.
