The Tacoma area was selected in part because it is the hometown of legendary glass artist Dale Chihuly. The museum opened in July of 2002 and is located near the University of Washington Tacoma in downtown. The museum is linked to the University of Washington via a bridge dubbed The Bridge of Glass. The bridge includes several glass-art masterpieces such as a glass tunnel, Venetian Wall and several glass columns.
