The band often uses the horror movie motif, and creates an eerie sound accented by keyboard and cello. For example, their song Those Who Left, from their first full length album Like the Exorcist but More Breakdancing, is an eight minute instrumental, often played live in total darkness. Many songs use seemingly lighthearted themes, such as zombies, but are crafted in a way that the songs remain macabre and mysterious.

Murder by Death was discovered by Thursday vocalist Geoff Rickly, who helped them get signed by Eyeball Records and produced their second album. He performs discrete background vocals in the song Killbot 2000. The two bands have played together a number of times.
