Mumbai metropolitan area
The Mumbai metropolitan area also known as the Greater Mumbai urban agglomeration is an agglomeration (or urbanised area) consisting of the metropolis of Mumbai and its satellite towns. It consists of five municipal corporations and fifteen smaller municipal councils. The entire area is overseen by the Mumbai Metropolitan Development Authority (MMRDA), a Maharashtra state government organisation in charge of town planning, development, transport and housing.

The area has an area of 1,273 sq km and a population of 17,702,761. http://www.mmrdamumbai.org/basic_councils.htm. It is linked to Mumbai through the Mumbai suburban railway.
