Multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a non-contagious chronic disease of the brain and spinal cord characterized by a variety of neurologic symptoms caused by demyelination of neurons. Multiple sclerosis results from attack by a patient's own immune system on their central nervous system and is thus categorized as an autoimmune disease.

Multiple sclerosis can take several different forms, with new symptoms occurring in discrete attacks or slowly accruing over time. In between attacks symptoms may resolve completely, though permanent neurologic deficits often persist. MS currently does not have a cure, though several treatments are available which may slow the onset of new symptoms. Although much is known about how MS causes damage, the exact cause of MS remains unknown. Due to its effects of the central nervous system, MS can result in long-term impaired mobility and disability in the more severe cases.
