Mugen Motorsports

Mugen Motorsports (M-Tec Co., Ltd) (無限) is a Japanese company specialized in the tuning of Honda engines, especially in preparation for motor racing. Its first was Honda's only turbocharged street vehicle, the Honda City Turbo. An overpowered version of their boxiest and most ungainly vehicle, this design was propounded by Hirotoshi Honda, son of the company's founder, who sought to demonstrate his abilities as a performance specialist by turning the ugly little car into a powerful performance vehicle. In spite the family connections, Mugen is not, and has never been, affiliated with Honda.

The company tunes and races Honda vehicles in the JGTC racing series, and additionally sells aftermarket parts to amateur enthusiasts. It was part of partnerships that won the Formula 3000 championship in 1990 and 1991, and that eventually lead to Mugen's involvement in Formula 1, from 1992 to 1998. Teams that used Mugen Honda engines include Footwork (1992-1993), Lotus (1994), Ligier/Prost (1995-1997) and Jordan (1998-2000). The Jordan partnership gave Mugen three wins in Formula 1, in the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix, with Damon Hill, and in the 1999 French and Italian Grand Prix, with Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Frentzen was also third in the championship that year, which was both Jordan's and Mugen's best performance.
