The wife of Robert Todd Lincoln was from Mount Pleasant. Current Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack lived in Mount Pleasant before being elected Governor, and served as Mayor of the city after the assination of Mayor Ed King during a City Council Meeting.

The city is the home of Iowa Wesleyan College. The P.E.O. Sisterhood was founded in Mount Pleasant by seven Iowa Wesleyan students.
