Moosewood Cookbook
Written originally by Mollie Katzen when she was a member of the Moosewood collective, the Moosewood Cookbook is considered one of the most significant modern vegetarian cookbooks. The original edition, published in 1978 by the then-fledgeling Ten Speed Press in California, was hand-lettered by Katzen and featured a number of the recipes favored by the restaurant at the time. The book came out shortly after Katzen left the collective, and there are rumors of some hard feeling between Katzen and the Collective.

Katzen later rewrote the book with leaner recipes, a version published in 1992, long after her original association with the Collective had lapsed, though she kept the title and the hand-lettered style; the later Collective went on to publish its own unrelated series of books. A sequel of sorts also exists, called The Enchanted Broccoli Forest; this book expands on topics such as baking that the Moosewood book does not cover in depth.

The Moosewood Cookbook is not considered particularly vegan-friendly -- Moosewood did not set out originally to be a vegetarian restaurant, and as a result significant amounts of cheese and other dairy products are used in its recipes. In some countercultural circles, however, it has a status roughly equivalent to The Joy of Cooking as a go-to recipe book for recipes. It has been criticized for a lack of authenticity in its ethnic recipes, as well as for the fact that a lot of its recipes (especially in the first edition) are high-fat restaurant food as opposed to healthier home fare.
