Montepulciano


 

Montepulciano is a town, population 13,879 (2003 census) situated in Central Tuscany on a high limestone ridge. Placed high on top of a hill, Montepulciano is around 2000 ft. above sea level. By car: 13km (8 miles) E of Pienza; 67km (40 miles) SE of Siena; 124km (74 miles) SE of Florence; 186km (115 miles) N of Rome.

The main street of Montepulciano stretches for 11.5 kilometers from the Porta al Prato to the Piazza Grande at the top of the hill. The principle buildings of the City, including the Duomo and the Palazzo Comunale were built during the high renaissance, front the Piazza. The walls of the city were designed and built under instruction of the great Florentine Cosimo I in 1511 by Antonio de Segallo the Elder.
