Montenotte


 

Montenotte is the name of a département of the First French Empire in present Italy. It was named after the village Montenotte near Savona to commemorate the Battle of Montenotte in 1796. It was formed in 1805, when Napoleon Bonaparte occupied the Republic of Genoa. Its capital was Savona. It was divided into the arrondissements of Savona, Acqui-Terme, Porto-Maurizio and Ceva. It was disbanded after the defeat of Napoleon in 1814. Its territory is presently divided over the Italian provinces Savona, Alessandria, Imperia and Cuneo.
