Character
Montclair is located on the First Mountain of the Watchung Range. Most of the town is on the eastward-side of this ridge. Thus, many locations provide excellent views of the surrounding area and the New York skyline, which is about 12 miles away. It may be argued that the beautiful scenery coupled with its geography provides an uniquely artistic character that draws a diverse populace. In the 19th century, George Inness, the Hudson River School painter, lived in town.
