Monotyping

Monotyping (not to be confused with monoprinting) is made by drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbant surface, often spontaneously and with no previous sketch, and then transferring this image onto a sheet of paper before the ink dries. A monotype print is often unique and difficult to reproduce, although a ghost print can be created after the first printing. Stencils, watercolor, solvents, brushes, and other tools are often used to embellish a monotype print.
