MOMO is a Realian—more specifically, a prototype 100-Series Observational Realian—developed with special technology to observe and contact Gnosis. MOMO has the appearance of a little girl, and was created by the famous scientist Joachim Mizrahi to resemble and replace his daughter, Sakura Mizrahi, who tragically died at the age MOMO now appears to be. For this reason, Jr. (who knew Sakura) has a special connection with MOMO. Juli Mizrahi, the wife of Joachim, is unsettled by MOMO, who is programmed to feel human emotion and wishes desperately for attention from Juli, whom she considers her mother. The cyborg Ziggy (Ziggurat 8), assigned to protect MOMO, acts as a father figure for her (it was, in fact, MOMO who gave him the nickname "Ziggy").

MOMO stands for "Multiple Observative Mimetic Organicus." Her name is a pun for momo, a japanese word for peach. It should be noted that her counterpart's name is sakura, a japanese flower typically depicted as pink.

At least in Xenosaga EPISODE I, MOMO seems to have been designed as an homage to the magical girl genre. Her outfit was made to resemble a "futuristic" Japanese schoolgirl's uniform, her weapons appear as magical rods, and among her Ether skills is the ability to transform into a more powerful version of herself, complete with a colorful costume. When she transforms, it is accompanied by a henshin sequence. Even her name may be a pun on one of the first magical girl shows, Minky Momo. (Also in this vein, the name of her deceased human counterpart could possibly be a nod to Card Captor Sakura, although this is certainly debatable.). Coincidently, her english voice actress also played the role of a magical girl in the Pretty Sammy dub.

Also, it has to be noted that her name might just simply be a pun on one of Namco's arcade games, Wonder Momo who's titular character (along with MOMO, KOS-MOS and Shion) made an appearance in the Turn Based Strategy Game, Namco X Capcom. However, this aspect of her character is little in evidence during Xenosaga EPISODE II.
