In Norway it was represented by names like Henrik Ibsen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Jonas Lie and Alexander Kielland, in Sweden by August Strindberg and partly by Viktor Rydberg and in Denmark by J. P. Jacobsen, Holger Drachmann, Herman Bang and Henrik Pontoppidan. The Danish theorist Georg Brandes is often considered to be the "wire-puller" behind the movement though some of the authors had already begun to write before he was known.
