In 2005, the award was officially sponsored by Major League Baseball for the first time. A committee made up of representatives of MLB and the editorial staff of its official website, MLB.com, shortlists six players in each league. The winner in each league is selected by an online poll of fans through MLB.com. The official name of the award is the Major League Baseball Comeback Player of the Year Award presented by Viagra® (sildenafil citrate).
