Mitchelstown Castle


 

Mitchlestown Castle was burned down shortly after the independance of the Irish republic in 1922. The castle was famous for having more windows that that of Buckingham palace in London. The owners of the castle - the Kingstons - were obliged to seal one window so as not be be seen as grander than the Royals in Buckingham.

Despite efforts the secure funding to rebuild the castle after the fire it was demolished and the stone used to build the Abbey at Mount Mellary in the Comeragh mountains.
