Milton Keynes (borough)
The Borough of Milton Keynes is a borough in England. Before April 1, 1997 it was part of Buckinghamshire, but since then it is an independent unitary authority with the same ranking{{fn|1}} as a county. It borders the administrative counties of Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. The principal settlement in the borough is Milton Keynes New City, which accounts for about 33% of its area and 90% of its population. (The "new city" is legally just a town, since city status in the United Kingdom is by grant of Royal Charter. However, it was designated under the New Towns Act to be the first "new city" and subsequently has been known as such.)
