It is undergoing redevelopment, mostly on the site of an old gas works. There is a tube station servicing a spur on the High Barnet Branch of the Northern Line. It is the least-visited station on the Northern Line - one in eight northbound trains goes there.

The Carl Zeiss optical works was established here in 1912. The Jehovah Witness have had a centre here since1958, and they redeveloped the optical works to become the International Bible Students Association in 1988.
