Military campaign
The term military campaign has two related meanings:

- a campaign by one side seeking victory in a war by conducting a series of related military operations
- "a connected series of military operations forming a distinct phase of a war" (Merriam-Webster)
In the first sense, it refers entirely to what one side does, and is useful for distinguishing between "the war" as a whole, and "the parties" to the war.

In the second sense, it can be a series of battles linked by time and geography, ie the North Africa Campaign of World War 2. In this sense, it is merely part of a larger war and thus makes no distinction between the parties to that war.
