Mike Gartner


 

Michael Alfred Gartner was born on the 29th of October, 1959 in Ottawa, Ontario. He was a Canadian professional hockey player who played in both the National Hockey League (NHL) and World Hockey Association (WHA).

Mike Gartner started his professional career playing in the now defuct WHA with the Cincinnati Stingers. He played one season there (1978-79) before moving on to the NHL. He was selected in the first round, 4th overall, by the Washington Capitals in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. He played in 1432 NHL Games with the Washington Capitals (1979-80 to 1988-89), Minnesota North Stars (1988-89 to 1989-90), New York Rangers (1989-90 to 1993-94), Toronto Maple Leafs (1993-94 to 1995-96), and Phoenix Coyotes (1996-97 to 1997-98), racking up 1335 points. He was also chosen the most valuable player of the 1993 NHL All-star game. He is one of only five men in league history to score 700 goals in a career.
