Mike D'Abo had already had minor success with another group, and had composed a hit single, "Handbags and Gladrags", for Chris Farlowe. His period with the Manfreds was probably the most successful attempt by a group to replace its lead singer at the height of its popularity. With D'Abo fronting, Manfred Mann enjoyed numerous hits, including "Ragamuffin Man", "Ha Ha Said the Clown" and the number one hit, "Mighty Quinn". After leaving the group, D'Abo played the part of Herod on the original recording of "Jesus Christ Superstar".
