Midrash
Midrash (Hebrew: ????; plural midrashim) is a Hebrew word referring to a method of exegesis of a Biblical text. The term "midrash" also can refer to a compilation of Midrashic teachings, in the form of legal, exegetical or homiletical commentaries on the Tanakh (Jewish Bible). ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Traditionally, understanding of Biblical text in Judaism is divided between peshat (direct meaning), remez (hints), derash (exegesis) and sod (mystical). The Midrash concentrates on remez but even more on derash.
