Middleton, Milton Keynes
Middleton is the current name of the village around which the new town of Milton Keynes was developed. Middleton is also known by the name Milton Keynes Village. Its old name, at the time the new town was constructed, was Milton Keynes. On old maps published in the 1700s, the village is recorded as Middleton Keynes. Sometime after the Domesday Book was published Middleton was often shortened to Milton. After the Norman invasion, the Cahaines family held the manor from 1166 to the late C13 as well as others in the country (Ashton Keynes, Somerford Keynes, and Horsted Keynes). During this time the village became known as Middleton de Keynes eventually shorting to Milton Keynes. (Source: Woodfield, Paul.
