Michael Murphy (born May 5, 1938) is an American character actor. After working as a high school teacher for two years he pursued an acting career. He is most remembered for playing Woody Allen's friend Yale in the film Manhattan. He is also remembered for the Robert Altman series Tanner '88, and as the mayor of Gotham City in Batman Returns. He can now be seen on the Canadian series This is Wonderland, for which he won a Gemini Award in 2004. That same year, he appeared in the film Childstar with Don McKellar. His TV credits also include Law & Order and its spinoff, '.
