Michael Moynihan was born in Mallow, County Cork in 1968. He was educated locally at Boherbue Comprehensive School near Mallow. A farmer by profession he first became involved in national politics in 1997. At the General election in that year he was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil TD. Moynihan's election caused somewhat of a shock when he succeeded in unseating sitting Fine Gael TD Frank Crowley in what had been one of Fine Gael's strongest constituencies where they had held more seats than Fianna Fáil. He retained his seat at the 2002 General Election topping the poll. Moynihan is considered a likely future Minister of State and was unlucky not to see some advancement in cabinet reshuffles in 2002 and 2004. He is currently the Chairperson of Ógra Fianna Fáil, the youth wing of the party.
