Gravgaard started his career with Randers Freja in 1996 playing in the lower divisions and in the summer 2002 he moved to danish premier league side Viborg FF where he established himself as one of the best central defenders in the danish league, but sometimes also used as a forward. He appeared in 94 games and scored 18 goals in his three seasons. The reason for his late entry to the top-flight was his wish to pursue an academic career.
