The city was developed by The Graham Companies during the 1970s, from land that was formerly occupied by the dairy of Ernest 'Cap' Graham. Most of Miami Lakes is still owned by the Grahams: Former U.S. Senator Bob Graham is one of the main owners, and the late publisher of the Washington Post, Katharine Graham, had a share by marriage.
