Mexico national football team
The Mexico national football team — the Tricolores or Tri for short — is the national team of Mexico and is controlled by the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol Asociación.

For most of the 20th century, but especially in the 1990s, they dominated the other CONCACAF sides, earning them the nickname of Giants of CONCACAF.

In the 2000's the United States have proven a credible challenger to Mexico's dominance on the contenental football scene, winning the 2002 Gold Cup and dismissing Mexico from Round 2 of the {{Wc|2002}}. However, Mexico then experienced a resurgence with the continuous and overall good participation of the Mexican national team and Mexican club sides as guests in the CONMEBOL tournaments of Copa Libertadores , which saw an upset club Guadalajara over Boca Juniors (ARG)by a score of 4-0. In the Copa América Mexico's win over Argentina 1-0, as well as their qualification run for the 2004 Summer Olympics and the win in the 2003 Gold Cup.

The participation of the Mexican national team in the 2005 FIFA Confederation Cup, the world saw what Mexico had to offer, and found them a force to be reckoned with in the global stage. This was after an upset to the World Cup Champions Brazil , by the minimum difference of 1-0. In the Quarter-Finals the Mexican team showed the same power to Argentina, but lost in a penalty shoot-out. The third place match between Germany and the Mexican team showed a great rivalry between the two nations. Germany in history has defeated and knock-out the Mexican team in critical games. Mexico lost 3-4 in extra time of the match. Though being fourth place Mexico has showed the whole world that not having players in Europe, it's a force to be fear by any team.

In the 2005 Gold Cup tournament, Mexico were eliminated by guests Colombia in the quarterfinal match, 2-1, after conceding a wild goal on a shot from over 100 feet with less than 15 minutes to play. The tournament ended with the US taking the Cup. At present the rivalry between the two sides shows no sign of cooling, with the USA having secured qualification for the {{Wc|2006}} by defeating Mexico 2-0 on September 3, 2005. Though, with their defeat by the US, Mexico secured their place four days later when they beat Panama 5-0 in Mexico City.

Although Mexico has made 13 World Cups, they have not had much success in the global championships. Many observers blame it on the footballing quality of the area comparing it to e.g. South America, or the lack of Mexican players abroad, but that is a very lengthy discussion. They only made the quarterfinals twice, in 1970 and 1986, both times when they hosted the tournament. They were suspended for 1990 competition for falsifying players' ages at a youth championship.

Mexico also won the Confederations Cup in 1999, when they hosted the tournament. They beat Brazil in the final, 4-3. On October the 2nd, 2005 the under-17 team won their first-ever FIFA Championship when they won the Peru 2005 Under-17 World Cup, defeating Brazil 3-0.
