Mexican American

The ethnonym Mexican American describes United States citizens of Mexican ancestry (14 million in 2003) and Mexican citizens who reside in the US (10 million in 2003). According to the Pew Hispanic Center, in mid 2001, 4.5 million Mexicans were residing illegally in the United States. Mexican Americans account for 64% of the Hispanic or Latino population of the United States. Settlement concentration is mostly in the Southwestern part of the United States, however, there are isolated concentration of Mexican-Americans near the Chicago area and in mostly rural areas in Florida and North Carolina.

Political Issues

Although frequently considered to be largely supporters of the Democratic Party Mexican-Americans, like any other ethnicity in America, may support the Democratic Party, the Republican Party, the Green Party, other political parties, or no party at all. Many of them are culturally conservative on matters such as abortion and homosexuality because of their Roman Catholic beliefs and the Republican Party is vying to make inroads with Mexican-American voters. Republican politicians such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and George W. Bush have found some degree of popularity amongst Mexican-American communities although they by no means lack Mexican-American detractors. LULAC is a very important organization for Mexican-Americans, though it also represents other Hispanic Americans.
