Hurricane Katrina

On August 29, 2005, Metairie was hit hard by the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, including widespread flooding from Lake Pontchartrain caused by the breaches and overflowing of lake levees. However, despite the severe devastation, it was not as badly affected as New Orleans proper as the breach of the 17th Street Canal levee on the Metairie-New Orleans border was on the other side.
