In addition to the various gaffes committed by Lastman, his family came into light when his wife was released from custody having stolen several low priced items from a local drugstore. It was later revealed through a Toronto Star article which gave a detailed report of how Mel Lastman had used his political influence as the mayor of amalgamated Toronto, to hide his wife's other various criminal escapades, in addition to the road construction scandal.
