Mek'ele
Mek'elē is capital of the Tigray region of Ethiopia and home to the headquarters of the UNMEE. It is located some 650 km north of the capital, Addis Ababa. Its estimated population is between 100,000 and 250,000, making it the largest city in northern Ethiopia.

Mekele was formed as Yohannes IV's nineteenth century capital city. It has since grown to be one of Ethiopia's principal economic centers with a large airport (which will soon feature international service) and the north's principal cement factory.

On 5 June, 1998 the Eritrean Air Force bombed Ayder School in Mek'elē during the Eritrean-Ethiopian War.
