The Medway Towns is the name given to a conurbation located to the north of Kent in England: until 1998 it was part of that county (see below). The Towns are located on the River Medway, from whence they get their name, and because of that location have made a wide and historically significant contribution to Kent, and to the United Kingdom. They were formed into one mainly built-up area by the gradual growth of their individual parts: Rochester, Chatham, and Gillingham; together with other smaller towns and villages (see the lists below). Within the boundary of the Towns are an environmentally significant wetlands region (including especially the North Kent Marshes and the largely unpopulated Hoo Peninsula. Medway Council, whose headquarters is located in Strood, governs the Medway Towns.
