"Me and Bobby McGee" is a song written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster, originally performed by Kristofferson and is one of the most-covered songs of all time. The best known recordings of "Me and Bobby McGee" are by Janis Joplin on her 1971 Pearl album and the Grateful Dead's Skull & Roses album, also released in 1971. Joplin's version topped the charts to become only the second posthumous number one single in Rock & Roll history.
