Barnaby is considered an enforcer despite his relatively unintimidating size (6'0", 188 lbs). Therefore, he racks up penalty minutes (his personal record is 335 with the 1995-96 Sabres), and is frequently involved in on-ice altercations. One of his most celebrated fights was with Rob Ray in 2001; ironically, the two are off-ice friends and had had dinner together the night before. Also ironically, Barnaby is known for his affable character off-ice and is one of the league's most willing interviewees.
